The first project undertaken by the East Timor Committee has
began to progress. This project involves furnishing a newly build chapel 40min walk from Aileu Village,
East Timor. The chapel St. Joseph the
Worker is currently empty inside consisting only of one small cement altar.
There are no church pews, bookstands or any other furnishings owned by the
Parish. The Parish Priest, Fr. Albino, holds regular Mass services where all
parish members come to church and sit on the cement floor. The East Timor Committee has committed to raising $2500 to furnish this chapel.
On Saturday 6th
August, committee member Chantelle Bell met with Sister Mary-Anne Dwyer in
Ballarat. Sister Mary-Anne has been living and working in East Timor for the
past seven years and will be the overseer of this project. Some initial funds
have been given to begin construction of the chapel furniture. The furniture is
being handcrafted by local Timorese men working in a disabled workshop in
Aileu. They have currently begun the construction of the first church pews.
Chantelle Bell meets and exchanges money with Sister Mary-Anne Dwyer. |
The East Timor Committee is seeking donations to help
support this project. Donations
can be made to St. Augustine’s Kyabram Parish Pastoral Council member Lee Pethybridge
or St Mary’s Rushworth Parish Pastoral Council member Ian Paterson or Chantelle Bell.
Any suggestions of
possible fundraising ideas are welcome.
